 How'd They Do That? Advanced Hand Drumming

Presented by  Sue Balaschak of Telling Point

Ever wonder how some drummers play such cool rhythms? Well, let me show you. This workshop will provide you with the tools and confidence to allow your own personality to speak through your drum.  We will discuss advanced drumming techniques, syncopated rhythms, dynamics, and exercises to improve your skills.  Prior drumming experience recommended.  Dive Into Drumming

Presented by  Sue Balaschak of Telling Point

Ride the wave of energy created by drumming!  Expand your connection between yourself, your drum and Mother Earth's energy.  We will discuss the spirit of the drum, drumming techniques, basic rhythms, and raising energy at drum circles. Sue Balaschak Bio:  Named "Panaha" (Drum Goddess), Sue felt a connection to Mother's rhythm as a child.  She has played the drums professionally for over 30 years, and has been teaching music since 1977.  As the drummer for the band Burning Sage, Sue has shared billings with many talented artists including Rusted Root, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Hot Tuna, Gaelic Storm, and best selling author Wayne Dyer.  She has performed with international artists Drum Play and Grammy nominee Peter Janson, and has presented hand drumming workshops at magickal events throughout the country. Sue also created a hand drumming CD "Primal Rhythm 1" that has received national recognition and will be featured in the upcoming PBS movie "Return of the Cuyahoga."

Give Your Loved Ones the Gift of Having Your  Affairs in Order

Presented by Attorney Beth B. Ferrier

This workshop with Athens attorney Beth Ferrier will assist you in developing a basic estate plan.  You will learn about the various forms of ownership for real estate and other assets; what is probate and how does it work; why you should have a will; what does an executor or guardian do; what is a power of attorney; and what happens if you do nothing at all.  We will complete powers of attorney for health care and living wills for all participants during the workshop, so everyone will have completed at least the first step in getting their affairs in order.

 

Ms. Ferrier is a Principal with the firm of Sowash, Carson & Ferrier, L.P.A. in Athens, Ohio, and maintains a general civil practice with emphasis in the areas of estate planning, business law, nonprofit law and intellectual property licensing.

 

 

 Henna/ Mehndi

Presented by Eli Olin

 Henna/ Mehndi Workshop will teach ingredients, how to mix your own henna paste, application and Tattoos!!!!  Only temporary (up to 3 weeks), wash hands and wear comfortable clothing- your paste will need to remain on for at least 5 hours!  Henna Artist Eli Olin has been working with Henna (or Mehndi) for more than 10 years in the Athens, Ohio area.

Caring for the Dead: Last Rites and Rights

As Americans age, many seek a holistic body of funeral rites that honor our dead and comfort the living in ways that reflect our Earth-based spirituality.  Join us as we undertake a frank and lively discussion on death, natural processes and current death care practices. We can empower ourselves in caring for our dead (and our finances!) by educating ourselves about our legal/consumer rights and the workings of the funeral industry. How do we really feel about death, the inevitable topic? We will learn how our death choices continue to affect the earth and also share some new memorial concepts sure to put a smile on your face.

 

It's in the Stars:  Astrology for Beginners 

Presented by Holly Cagle

Do you hear others talk about astrology and signs and wonder what it all means?  This workshop will help you to understand how our position in the universe affects us and our relationships with others.  Explained by an astrologer with over 20 years of experience.

 

Up with the Sun: Morning Yoga 

Presented by Adam Hoyt

Ground-based Hatha Yoga stretches focuses mainly on spine flexibility and hip openers.  Short periods of silent/guided meditation will follow each morning's session of stretches.  Adults are welcome.  Teens encouraged to attend if able to maintain a mature level of focus and self awareness. Daily sessions.

 

Poi Spinning

Presented by Shelley Riggs

A beginning workshop teaching the basics of poi spinning. 'Poi' are a traditional Maori dance prop from New Zealand and has given rise to a contemporary style of spinning popular all over the world.  Basic control and tricks will be taught, with the opportunity for spinners to advance as far as they are comfortable during the workshop.  No experience necessary.  Safety and courtesy as a spinner will also be addressed.  This is not a fire workshop - fire will not be taught at Autumn Fires.  Sock poi will be available for use during the workshop, but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

 

Cordial Making

Presented by Dan and Shelley Riggs

A cordial is a sweet alcoholic beverage, often flavored with fruits, herbs, spices, flowers, seeds, roots, plants, barks, and sometimes cream. Liqueurs date back centuries and are historical descendants of herbal medicines.  Learn how to make these tasty flavored sipping drinks which don't need to be aged for long periods before drinking.
