Misconceptions
of Belly Dancing as a Vegas experience or even strip-tease type
dancing are deteriorating as this special art becomes even more
mainstream with health clubs and gyms offering classes throughout the
USA. The dance itself is one of the most ancient forms of movement,
used during rituals and celebrations. It was used during births
by women encouraging a woman in labor to move a particular way for
comfort, releasing pressure, or to help wedge a baby through the
birth canal. Most often this form of dance was reserved for
only women in the company of only women.
Through
the years various forms of dance from different cultures have
overlapped, although there remains distinctions in specific movements
that can be described by there roots. Sharing in Belly Dancing
is an opportunity to culturally open hearts, bodies and minds to
unaccustomed rhythms and movement. It is also about empowering
women to appreciate their bodies through a dance that celebrates the
womanly form- no matter what shape or size. In fact, it is
intended to bring women closer to themselves. Anoushka
has been studying the art of belly dance extensively for eight years
now, performing professionally for 4 years and teaching for 3
years. She has had formal instruction in traditional Egyptian,
Syrian, Turkish, and American Tribal Style dance, along with various
interpretations by nearly 30 instructors who have touched her dance soul.
