WELCOME to the 8th Annual Autumn Fires at Wisteria

For the weekend, we have lots of autumn fun, secular and sacred.  Autumn Fires is also a kid's paradise for halloween season fun.  If you want some unstructured time, plan to arrive on Thursday for a free-form day with no scheduling.  Enjoy some time in nature with like-minded folks.  Most participants arrive after work on Friday for the weekend.  Friday around dusk we'll kick off the weekend . . .

Annual Autumn Fires Community Clay Pit Firing

The centerpeice of Autumn Fires is the all-night Saturday firing of the various peices of clay objects that are made during Autumn Fires.  From children and novices to artists, everybody can fashion something from the clay!  Come give it a try.  Throughout Saturday, we make things of clay and let them dry.  Around dinnertime, we load our brick-lined in-ground pit and tend the fire in celebration through the night.  In the morning, we comb the warm ashes to see what the fire has made.  Great fun!

The firing of clay vessels and other clay objects began with native cultures creating functional wares for use in gathering food and water. Later, the process evolved to include figurines and other sculptural objects. In the past few decades, there has been a renewed interest in primitive firing processes, as artisans become more interested in the spontaneous effects of these firing processes, and the aesthetic and decorative qualities that occur as a result of the fire.

Saturday Night:

Ancestor Ceremony

Night Candle Labyrinth

Stone Working Ceremony

Annual Pit Firing

Harp Music by Pat McGee

Follow the labyrinth’s convoluted candle-lined paths for a personal meditative journey of transformation and reflection.  Labyrinths are constructed walking patterns that combine the circle and the spiral into purposeful paths of self-discovery and awareness.  While your interpretation of the experience is your own, many see walking the labyrinth as an active metaphor for life’s journey.  How do you walk?  How do you treat those you meet on the path?  What impressions or ideas do you experience as you journey to the center of your being and back?  How are we all connected during our personal journeys?  Using hundreds of lit candles to define the pathways, the Labyrinth at Cornstalk will glow through the night for journeys of discovery and reflection.

After dark, with firelight, labyrinth candles and musicians playing meditative music, come and help add to Wisteria’s Sacred Sites area by putting some sacred time into expanding the Stone Circle’s surrounding walls. You are welcome to bring a stone or more from your own bioregions to leave a permanent remembrance in the circle.  Use this self-guided working ceremony to think about future and past, to add good wishes and good intent to our Planet Earth and fellow beings, to bring health and wellness to yourself and others and to help heal the wounds and brighten the future. Stay for only a few minutes or stay for hours -- let your spirit guide you this enchanted evening.

Natural Freedom

Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching

Natural Freedom, Equine Facilitated Learning will offer an experiential workshop focusing on the mind, body and spirit connection.  Individuals will participate in activities with a horse that are on the ground, not on the horse and encourage mindfulness and intentionality in the horse ring and the world outside. Throughout the exercises, Natural Freedom services focuses on developing the horse/human relationship by encouraging the participant to monitor the horses non-verbal cues to the exercises, The horse mirrors the handler and will be a direct reflection of the handlers thoughts, emotions and body language. This unique self-development educational approach provides the opportunity to practice inner awareness and conscious decision-making skills. Spending time with the horse will help you gain an understanding of how you can choose to react, emotionally to your life and what it throws at you, or the power you have within to create your life's path.

Spirit Forge

James Kelly

Demonstrating Artist

Blacksmith O'Kelley has been fabricating and welding metal crafts using modern methods for 16 years.  He has been demonstrating traditional coal-forge blacksmithing at Renaissance Faires in Michigan and Indiana for five years.  He also forged at Wisteria's Summer Solstice earlier this year.  It was his first Earth based festival and he looks forward to returning many times in the future.  His interest in blacksmithing has evolved into an effort to pass knowledge of the craft on to others in order that the art does not die.  He attends the Unitarian Church in Huntington, West Virginia with his wife Vallorie and his daughters Sierra, Rowan and Catie.  One of his goals is to learn more about his Celtic origins, particularly their forging techniques.
