Over 200 acres of
Wisteria have been designated as a permanent nature retreat.
Sanctuary:
Wisteria's
land is an important part of our community. The land is in the
process of healing. Part of our guiding principle is to honor
and nurture the ecosystems of which we are a part.
Biodiversity:
One third of
our land is permanently protected as a nature preserve, it is home to
coyote, deer, turkey, and others who roam through the Mixed
Mesophytic Forest of beech, tulip tree, maple, oak, ash, elm, and
cherry. In the spring, delicate wildflowers scatter across the forest floor.
Stone & Water:
For thousands
of years small streams have cut through the unglaciated Pottsville
shales and sandstones of Wisteria. Today, deep ravines, rock
outcroppings, and natural standing stones grace the forest.
Wisteria
is situated on 620 private and rural acres in the Allegheny mountain
plateau region of the Appalachian mountain chain. Swisher Coal
Company and others strip mined and lumbered the area beginning around
1959. Reclamation work was done by the state of Ohio from the
mid-1980's until the mid-1990's. We now continue the reclamation of
the land and water.
